If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.
What is it all about? What the Bible has revealed is that it is basic to our Christian life on earth. Take a look at these Scriptures:
Galatians 5:16 (ISV)
16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never fulfill the desires of the flesh.
Romans 8:8 (AMP)
8 So then those who are living the life of the flesh [catering to the appetites and impulses of their carnal nature] cannot please or satisfy God, or be acceptable to Him.
Romans 8:13-14 (AMP)
13 For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall [really and genuinely] live forever.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Galatians 5:25 (AMP)
25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.] Two questions arise here: “What exactly does it mean to LIVE BY THE SPIRIT?” The second one is similar: “What does it mean to WALK BY THE SPIRIT?”
There is a story in the Bible that helps us as we ponder these questions. It is about Mary and Martha.
Luke 10:38-42 (TLB)
38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. 39 Her sister Mary sat on the floor, listening to Jesus as he talked. 40 But Martha was the jittery type and was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Sir, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me." 41 But the Lord said to her, "Martha, dear friend, you are so upset over all these details! 42 There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her!"
There are many things to worry about daily in church and outside the church. What our Lord was saying to Martha is this: the opportunity to listen to the living Word of God is far more precious than all the activity driven religious service. “What Mary was doing is basic to spiritual life,” for we must understand it before we can go and live it out in all the arenas of life – at home, at work, in church and everywhere and anywhere else.
I invite you to sit with us at the feet of our Master Jesus and let us prayerfully ask His Holy Spirit our Teacher to expound to us the mysteries of LIFE IN THE SPIRIT.
